Haiku 俳句

What is Haiku?

It is a Japanese short poem about 3 lines of 5, 7, 5 syllables of sentences. It is introduced in 17th Century by famous poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1674)

Matsuo Basho was the most famous poet of the Edo period in Japan, During his lifetime, Basho wa recognized for his works in the collaboration haikai no renga form; today, after centuries of commentary, he is recognized as the greatest master of haiku (then called hokku). Matsuo Basho's poetry is internationally renowned; and, in Japan many of his poems are reproduced on monuments and traditional sites. Although Basho is justifiably famous in the West for his hokku, he himself believed his best work lay in leading and participating in renku. He is quoted as saying, "Many of my followers can write hokku as well as I can. Where I show who really am is in linking haikai verses."

Basho was introduced to poetry at a young age, and after integrating himself into the intellectual scene of Edo (modern Tokyo) he quickly became well known throughout Japan. He made a living as a teacher; but the renounced the social, urban life of the literary circles and was inclined to wander throughout the country, heading west, east, far into the northern wilderness to gain inspiration for his writing. His poems were influenced by his firsthand experience of the world around him, often encapsulating the feeling of a scene in a few simple elements.

I made my own humble haiku, it goes like this.

Japan Food VS Malaysian Food

Bismillah,

It is a blessing to be born in Malaysia. Living among many people from different races and able to share their different cultures among Malaysians. The food in Malaysia is rather diverse and has it own unique taste and texture. Malay typical food is rice that comes with different types of dishes with meat and vegetables. Indians popular cuisine is all sort of curry dishes. Commonly, Malaysians prefer roti canai as a meal for breakfast. Chinese food is usually a dish that associates with noodles. Char Kuew Teaw is very popular and has been prepared in restaurants and not just by Chinese. Most Malaysians eat with their hands and put different kinds of dishes in one plate. It can be rice, fish, and vegetables or rice and chicken. As rice is a staple food in Malaysia.

Japan has its own interesting food and the way of eating. Mostly people might imagine Japanese food as sushi. However, that's not the only food they have. They eat rice like Malaysians do, but usually they have more starch in it and eat them in a bowl,, without combining other dishes in it. They eat rice and dishes separately. Their dishes are usually soupy. Either it is a meat soup, or vegetable soup. Soy sauce and soy beans is very important in Japanese food. It give more flavor to spice up the meals They use chopsticks to pick up food and eat them.
